Math Program Grade 1–2 Grade 3–8 Pre-Algebra Algebra 1 Math Vision To achieve student success by developing interest and confidence in math through mathematical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills. We value learning based on concept and principle understanding. Our programs are:IntensiveInteractiveEngaging Math 1ST AND 2ND GRADE Class format: 1-hour class, twice a week In Math, our youngest students build foundational skills in early mathematical concepts, including number and pattern recognition, geometry, measurement, and problem-solving skills. Our experienced early education teachers help students learn to love counting, adding, and seeing shapes in the world around them. With teacher modeling and guided and independent practice, our learning center features a combination of on-screen learning and drawing and writing exercises.Classes are one hour each, twice a week. 2–3 topics are practiced within a class period. A test is given every 5–6 weeks (10–12 classes). Typical Class Flow 90-second speed test Warmup exercises Concept introduction or review Practice, guided practice and group discussion, independent (written) practice, whiteboard, notebook, or chat-box Browse By Grade 1st Grade Through detailed instruction and intensive practice, 1st graders gain invaluable strategies and tools to become successful math students. In twice-weekly math classes, 1st graders:Learn whole number relationships and place valueHone their understanding of addition and subtractionSolve addition and subtraction word problems using learned strategiesPractice linear measurement and compare different objectsIdentify geometric shapes and their attributesTell and write time Minimum of four students, maximum of ten students per class. 2nd Grade 2nd grade students advance to the next level in our twice-weekly math classes, where they: Master base-ten notationUse place value to compare numbers, add, and subtractBuild fluency with addition, subtraction, and units of measurePractice problem solving with a variety of strategiesAnalyze shapes and their attributesStudy measurement concepts, such as adding and subtracting time and counting moneyInterpret and create graphs Minimum of four students, maximum of twelve students per class. Grade 3–8 Class format: 2-hour class, once a week Think like a mathematician in VSA Math: logically, rigorously, and intuitively. In our learning center’s weekly math classes, students in grades 3–8 integrate a rigorous foundation in math principles with problem-solving skills, data analysis, and mathematical thinking. Students begin with Fast Math Facts to improve fluency and mental math strategies, before moving on to the interactive lesson. Our learning center’s math lessons are Common Core-aligned and designed to engage students through a variety of discussions, engaging activities, and problem-solving collaborations. Individualized feedback & support During the practice portion, students apply new concepts to online problems that adapt to each student’s level—ensuring that everyone proceeds at their own pace. Teachers receive real-time diagnostics and provide individualized feedback and support during the practice portion. At Each Level, Students Focus On Multiple Areas: Numbers and Operations (Addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)Measurement and Data (Interpreting tables, charts, and graphs)Expressions, equations, and functionsGeometry (Area, perimeter, volume, congruency)Pre-algebra and algebraStatistics and probabilityAnd more!Whether they’re practicing multiplication and division, dividing fractions, or using algebra to solve complex word problems, students are building their math fluency and using deductive reasoning skills. Minimum of four students, maximum of twelve students per class. Pre-Algebra Our comprehensive, year-long Pre-Algebra curriculum equips students with the knowledge and practice they need to be ready for Algebra. The unit structure creates a cohesive narrative, with direct instruction on topics ranging from ratios and proportions to algebraic equations and inequalities. Along with the pre-algebra topics, additional lessons on a wide range of math skills prepares students for high school-level work. Unit assessments and periodic exams monitor student progress and growth. Encompassing skill sets and standards for the late middle school through early high school years, the curriculum begins with a review of pre-algebra concepts before diving into multi-step and linear equations. By the end of the year, students become adept at polynomials, quadratic equations, and rational and radical expressions. Each class features direct instruction paired with guided and independent practice to help students pursue advanced-level math courses in high school and beyond.
