Master the Power of Words with VSA in our Summer Vocabulary and Reading Comprehension Class PRINT FRIENDLY Master English Language Arts in VSA’s Vocabulary & Reading Comprehension Summer Program In today’s interconnected world, strong communication skills are crucial for students. To help them become confident and articulate, a rich vocabulary is essential. This summer at VSA Future, we offer an evening class designed to build a robust vocabulary and enhance reading comprehension, empowering your student to excel as they enter the new school year. This program will equip students with the fundamental skills necessary to thrive in their academic journey and beyond. Building a Strong Vocabulary Sets the Stage for Confidence Having a rich understanding of words empowers children to navigate texts with ease. This foundation helps them succeed in future academic and professional settings. From tackling word problems in math and dissecting complex literature to comprehending exams, texts, and daily encounters, a strong vocabulary equips students to excel across academic subjects and everyday life. VSA Students Succeed on State Tests! VSA parents agree: Since starting VSA classes, their child’s statewide test scores have significantly improved. In 2023 VSA students scored at or near 100% on the ELA portion. Many of our students scored in the top levels of the ELA section of the state tests. Consequences of School Shifts Away from Vocabulary In recent years, many public schools have de-emphasized dedicated vocabulary instruction, leading to a decline in national reading scores. Research highlights the critical role of vocabulary by fourth grade, as this foundation impacts future reading success. Traditional vocabulary lessons, often implemented in schools, were also notorious for their repetitive drills and rote memorization. These methods are not only ineffective, but also demotivate students with vast amounts of uninspired work. Cultivate Reading & Writing Excellence Through Vocabulary Mastery At VSA Future, we believe mastery of vocabulary is key to unlocking strong writing and critical reading. We actively engage students in exploring the building blocks of language, building their appreciation for diverse textual encounters, from thought-provoking essays to captivating novels. Our goal is to equip students with a comprehensive set of reading and vocabulary skills, empowering them to excel as learners, critical thinkers, and effective writers. Unlocking Etymology and Real-World Application The VSA vocabulary program employs a diverse set of strategies to help students expand their vocabulary while forging connections with Greek and Latin roots. These strategies include: Unlocking Etymology: Delving into root words from Greek and Latin for deeper understanding. Defining Success: Building a strong foundation through clear and concise definitions. Building with Context: Utilizing sentence completions, analogies, and parts of speech to understand word usage. Visual Learning: Combining visual clues with vocabulary for enhanced memorization. Real-World Application: Practicing through sentence construction and application examples. From “Interesting” to “Spectacle”: Become a Wordsmith This Summer Do you ever struggle to find the perfect word to express what you see or how something feels? In our program, we’ll discover a treasure trove of words that go beyond the ordinary. We’ll explore words like “speculate,” learning how to form theories and describe things based on what we observe, not just what we know for sure. Imagine watching an exciting game and instead of saying “it’s interesting,” you could use the word “spectacle” and instantly elevate your description. We’ll also delve into the world of touch, going beyond the simple verb “to touch” and discovering words like “tactile” that paint a vivid picture of the experience. Build Vocabulary, Build Confidence: VSA’s Personalized Approach to Learning Our experienced instructors foster a collaborative learning environment, encouraging students to confidently share personal connections and visual imagery associated with the vocabulary they’re exploring. This interactive approach, emphasizing peer interaction, ensures our lessons are enjoyable and engaging for all students, helping them build a robust vocabulary efficiently.
