The Importance Of Public Speaking

Why is it important to study public speaking? Being able to communicate effectively is one of the most valuable life skills someone can have.

After all, communication aids in all aspects of life and allows us to form connections, influence decisions, share knowledge and even motivate change.

Without excellent communication skills, it’s very difficult to progress in the working world, and even impossible to succeed in a leadership position.  Public speaking is one of the most important forms of communication.  However, speech anxiety is a very common fear. Sometimes students avoid raising their hands (or stay silent in online classes). But in the working world, usually, you cannot avoid participating in conversations with coworkers, bosses, employees, and clients.

That’s why public speaking is a skill worth learning. Some of its major benefits include:

Boosting confidence
Public speaking can help you overcome fears and insecurities which is a very empowering feeling.  Your confidence levels will grow as you go from speaking to small groups of people up to large audiences. This is a very meaningful benefit because it makes you more comfortable around other people as you learn that you have valuable insights and opinions to share with the world.

While the nervousness that comes with public speaking won’t entirely disappear, you’ll learn to turn a difficult situation into an accomplishment.

Although most of us are not faced with having to participate in big conferences daily, learning public speaking increases your general speaking abilities. If you get to feel comfortable speaking to a group or big audience, you’ll likely be comfortable and confident in day-to-day conversations.

Developing Thinking Skills
When preparing a persuasive speech, you’ll have to think through real problems impacting life, campus, community, or company to provide possible solutions to those problems.

This will allow you to research and analyze information to come up with your own ideas and conclusions.

Besides, you’ll have to think thoroughly about how to convey these ideas to others in detail and how to tailor the message to fit the needs of your audience.

Skillful public speakers learn to craft their speeches so well that they’ll make their points relevant to listeners, and help the audience understand their views.

Influencing People Around You
You have the right to stand up and speak out about the issues you see in the world. Why not use that power to help people to do the right thing?  You can be the force of change and impact the world.

Also, being persuasive is a significant aspect of becoming business savvy and winning over the crowd. In the business world, you have to seize opportunities and be prepared to express why your product or idea is important.

Motivating People
As a public speaker, your goal is not only to convey information but to inspire others. Studying famous speeches like Dr. Martin Luther King’s ‘I Have a Dream’ shows the beauty of motivating others to do things, like achieving their goals.

By sharing your knowledge and passion, you can help others to find their own path.

Becoming a better listener
Public speakers don’t spend all the time talking. Instead, they need to be very good listeners to understand their audience, gain their trust, and keep in touch with the things happening around them.

Public speaking lessons will teach you to listen to others and respect their views and opinions, even if these are very different from yours. Over time, this will passively build your listening ability and note-taking.
