Sunshine Campers (Pre-K to Grade 2)Our Sunshine curriculum is specially crafted for our youngest campers. Each day of our Educational Summer Camp is jam-packed with a range of creative and engaging in-person activities. Outdoor Oasis Get active and enjoy the summer rays with Outdoor Oasis! Each day, students explore and have fun in Huckleberry’s Outdoor Play Area, which features a jungle gym, playground set, and much more. Counselors lead daily activities, including freeze dance, races, beanbag toss, and more, while Free Play gives campers the freedom to imagine and collaborate together while getting a workout. The Outdoor Play Area is fully secured with child-proof railings, and the only entrance/exit is through the Huckleberry center (no public access). Global Speaker Series In this weekly series, campers are exposed to real-world issues with compelling talks that broaden students’ perspectives on the world, from global warming to a scientist’s daily life and so much more. Parent 1st Grader Registration FAQ What ages does the camp serve? Camp is for students entering Pre-K to 8th grade in the Fall of 2023. What is the camp daily schedule? Camp Drop-Off begins at 8am, and all campers should arrive by 8:45am. The first camp class begins at 9am. Early Drop-Off is available from 7:30am for an additional daily fee.Parents can begin picking up children as early as 4pm; activities run until 5:30pm when Pick-Up begins. Late Pick-up is available from 6 to 6:30pm for an additional daily fee. What are the 10 camp weeks like? For Week 1 to Week 8, campers take three 45-minute academic classes per day on Mondays to Thursdays. Academic classes are held on the First Floor in the VSA Future space. The rest of the camp day is spent on the Second Floor in the Huckleberry Family Entertainment Center, where various camp activities are held.For Week 9 and Week 10, the camp day consists of Huckleberry activities. There are no VSA academic classes in Weeks 9 and 10. This gives students a charge to recharge and relax at the end of summer before school starts! How do I register for camp? Camp enrollment is offered on a weekly basis from June 26 through September 1, 2023. Each camp week features an independent curriculum. Students can enroll for consecutive or non-consecutive weeks. We recommend that students take consecutive weeks when possible to ensure the fullest continuity in learning.Register online here. When you sign up, you’ll choose the number of weeks and which weeks. Note: Parents can change which camp weeks their child takes before April 30, 2023 by emailing vsahbcamp@gmail.com.At registration, there is a nonrefundable prepayment of $100/week that is credited toward your full camp tuition. The balance is due 5 days after parents receive the camp invoice. There is a $75 registration fee for new students.After registration, you will receive an email with your camp invoice and payment instructions. The discount rate is based on the registration date. If the full payment is not received by the due date (five days after invoice is sent), the discount rate will be based on the rate at that time.Your camp spot is guaranteed after full payment is received.Tuition is nonrefundable and nontransferable to other VSA and Huckleberry programs.If you decide to add additional weeks after your initial registration, the additional tuition will be calculated at the tuition rate of the date of your notification email. Payment is due within five days after the invoice is sent. Is there a minimum number of weeks? There is a minimum registration of 2 weeks. What are the qualifications of VSA teachers? Do they go through a rigorous selection process? At VSA Future, we use a rigorous selection process to ensure that our teachers can provide your child with the care and education they need.Our extensively trained educators have each spent 5–19 years in the classroom. We have received excellent feedback from students and parents regarding our teachers. How do I know what section to enroll my child in? For new students, class placement is determined by a placement test after registration. You will receive an email about the placement test and sign up for specific class times after the placement test.For current students, parents can check their child’s class schedule in the family Dropbox folder for the Spring 2021 class level. For Fall 2022 your child will take the next level up. E.g., if a child takes D-W in Spring 2022, they will take E-W in Fall 2022. Current students may be placed into alternative levels in discussion with the director. Is there a sibling discount? Yes. After the first child, the second child receives a 5% discount. The third child (and subsequent siblings) receives a 10% discount. Is there a referral bonus? Yes, if you refer a friend who signs up for 3+ weeks of camp, both you and your friend will receive a $35 referral bonus. Curriculum FAQ What is the ratio of teachers to students? VSA class size ranges from 4–12 students, with one teacher and a teacher assistant. How are students placed into classes? What is the curriculum level? Camp students in Pre-K to grade 2 will take a diagnostic on their first day of camp.Camp students in grades 3–8 are placed in classes according to their math and writing levels. Diagnostic tests will be administered in June 2023 to place students into their camp classes. What is the weekly curriculum for Pre-K to Grade 2? Pre-K to Grade 2 students are known as Sunshine students. Sunshine students take English, Reading & Writing, and Math on Mondays to Thursdays. What is the weekly curriculum for grades 3–8? For Grades 3–8, each week’s classes feature a self-contained, independent curriculum in Reading/Writing*, Math, and Public Speaking.*On Weeks 1, 3, 5, 7, campers take Writing. Each week covers a different writing genre and campers finish one essay per week.On Weeks 2, 4, 6, 8, campers take Reading Comprehension. Each week, students study 6–8 reading passages in different genres and practice identifying main ideas, themes, key evidence, and test-taking strategies. Is there homework during camp? Campers in 3rd grade and up have one writing homework assignment per week (during Writing weeks), which is completed on an online platform. We encourage students to practice their Public Speaking speeches at home. There is no math homework. What are the qualifications of the camp teachers? Our camp teachers consist of VSA Future’s senior teachers in English, math, and writing who have taught our school-year classes. Each teacher underwent a rigorous selection process, and all of our teachers feel a deep sense of responsibility and care for their students. We have received excellent feedback from students and parents regarding our teachers.Our camp counselors are schoolteachers and trained students. Camp Logistics FAQ Is there a school bus available to pick up campers? VSA is receiving quotes from local shuttle companies and we will provide an update once we have more details on possible shuttles.Parents can arrange carpools. VSA is happy to connect parents who are interested in organizing carpools with nearby families. How does the camp handle food allergies? Parents will complete medical questionnaires for each camper, including medications, allergies, and emergency contact information, which will be kept on file for all camp staff. All camp snacks and hot lunches will be nut-free. How does the camp handle illness? If a child is not feeling well (including fever, sore throat, etc.), we will contact parents and the emergency contact(s) immediately and arrange for the child to rest in a separate room. Students can return to camp after 24 hours of being fever-free. For severe illness, a doctor’s release form will be required for return. What are the cleaning procedures? The entire center (VSA and Huckleberry) is sanitized and cleaned every day. Do campers need to wear masks? Mask requirements will depend on the status of COVID-19 at that time. We currently will not require masks, but we will update our requirements as needed. Is there a camp t-shirt? Campers are required to wear the camp shirt every day when they are in Huckleberry facilities (half the day), and they can change into the camp shirt at camp. Campers receive two free t-shirts at registration. Sign up for 6 or 7 weeks receive three free t-shirts. Sign up for 8 or 9 weeks to receive four free t-shirts. Sign up for 10 weeks to receive five free t-shirts.Additional shirts are available for purchase for $10.Each student will also receive a free tote bag for daily use. What is the Camp Talent Show? The Camp Talent Show is on Friday, August 11 (Week 7), followed by a reception and party.Campers from any week are welcome to participate in the Camp Talent Show.
