Maximize Growth & Learning for your Child at VSA Future Maximize Growth & Learning for your Child at VSA Future Compared to previous decades, parents of young children and adolescents face unique challenges. In today’s society, with constant exposure to technology through smartphones, social media, television, and video games, parents have found themselves in an uphill battle against ever-evolving technology. According to a 2020 survey conducted by the National Assessment of Educational Progress shared by the Pew Research Center, “American 9- and 13-year-olds who say they read for fun on an almost daily basis have dropped from nearly a decade ago and are at the lowest levels since at least the mid-1980s.” Parents worldwide ask the same question: how can we make learning engaging? The VSA Future Way Instead of shying away from technology, VSA Future is a learning center that promotes student engagement through technology. Skilled Certified teachers are assigned small classroom sizes to work closely with students on specific skills. To boost reading comprehension, students read high-interest texts from multiple genres. Scholars are tasked with annotating, analyzing, and discussing texts. VSA Future adheres to the New Jersey state standard grade-level requirements. VSA Future utilizes educational tech learning management platforms such as Nearpod, Writable, IXL, and many more to create engaging lessons for learners.Instructors at VSA assist students with applying practical strategies to learning. Teachers focus on connecting learning to the real world, encouraging collaboration, incorporating visual aids, and promoting brainstorming. Educators at VSA focus on learning through soft skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and time management to encourage student growth and mastery of specific NJSLA state standards. VSA exposes students to a plethora of writing genres including argument, narrative, definition, speeches, literary analysis, research tasks, memoir, and more! After completing rigorous lessons, students have weekly one-on-one conferences with their VSA teacher. VSA teachers provide relevant and authentic feedback curated for individual students. The goal is for students to advance in writing. At VSA, students are encouraged to take academic risks that challenge them as writers across multiple genres. Based on data from Renaissance Learning (a Disctict reading assessment tool used by NJ schools): “In middle school (grades 6–8), nonfiction reading dips back to 21% of total reading (approximately 1 nonfiction book for every 4 fiction title).” Our learning center exposes students to various diverse nonfiction texts ranging from articles, memoirs, blogs, and opinion pieces. Exposure to nonfiction texts is a skill needed for student success at the collegiate level; many college courses require dense nonfiction readings as part of the course curriculum. Not only do our teachers ensure that students are exposed to these texts, but they give students the confidence needed to dissect all types of literature, such as note-taking, vocabulary acquisition, and reading for the author’s purpose. At-Home Supports What makes VSA unique? The focus on organization and executive functioning is followed up at home. Students are given digestible chunks of reading, grammar, vocabulary, and writing assignments that they start in class. Teachers follow the, I do, you do, we do model. Students are given extensions of the work to complete at home. The extension assignments are specific to student needs. This allows for transparency so parents can see exactly what their child is learning and follow up to monitor growth and progress. Teachers from VSA provide timely detailed feedback on each writing assignment with specific comments tied to writing skills. Teachers focus on strengths and areas of improvement for students. When students come to class, they know exactly what edits and revisions are necessary for them to master specific writing tasks.
