Sacagawea’s Role in American History

Sacagawea’s Role in American History

By Serena O.
Grade 4

Have you heard of Sacagawea? Sacagawea was brave, helpful, and important. She helped her tribe, the Shoshones, and her leaders, Lewis and Clark, a lot throughout her journey! She played a big role in our history by exploring a whole new colony, and she even has her own coin!

Sacagawea was brave and never afraid. Like when a storm broke out in 1805, which caused her whole canoe to flip over. While all the men were struggling to flip it over, she calmly went into the water with her baby strapped to her back and saved all the important notebooks, information and objects, before they all floated away. This helped Lewis, Clark, and her whole tribe save all their valuable things before they all floated away and never seen again. The text says, “Sacagawea calmly went into the water. With her baby strapped to her back. She saved the notebooks and tools that would have floated away.” That is how she was brave when her canoe flipped over; she acted respectful and careful while she picked everything up and didn’t show a flash of fear.

She was also helpful and guided the explorers. Explorers once came to the Shoshone territory (Sacagawea’s tribe) and Sacagawea assisted them through the mountains. She also helped them buy horses from her fellow Shoshones. The text says, “Sacagawea helped them find a route through the mountains. She also helped them buy horses from her fellow Shoshone.” A few months later, she even helped translate for a group of Nez Perce Indians to the Shoshones and Lewis and Clark, her leaders, and led them through the trails she remembered from childhood through the mountains. This is how she was useful and kind when the explorers came.

To end, Sacagawea was an important person and even helped us explore a new nation. Two centuries after Sacagawea was born, the government made a coin about her to honor her and help us remember what she did for us. In the text it states, “In 2000, two centuries after she was born, a special coin was created. It honors a brave young woman who helped explore a new nation.” Finally, this is how Sacagawea was important and how she played a role in history!

Therefore, that is why Sacagawea was a brave, helpful, and important person. She is part of our history, and we should always honor her for her bravery, helpfulness, and the part she took in history. She helped Lewis and Clark a lot and took a big place in her tribe. Sacagawea was a great person, and we should always honor her!
