Scholastic Writing Award Winner: Luna, my darling Luna, my darling Scholastic Gold Key in Poetry winner By VSA Student, Grade 10 I look at the stars and thank them for making the moon happyFor letting her shine in the skyAnd perform her ever-changing dances on the stageAnd being quiet in the backgroundAnd letting her beauty be seen. I look at the clouds and thank them for making the moon happyFor letting her rest when she’s tiredAnd covering her with fluffy blankets when she’s coldAnd letting her wear their white silky dresses when she doesn’t like hers. I look at the birds and thank them for making the moon happyFor supporting her performance with more lifeAnd accompanying her dance with their songAnd filling her stage with sound for the audienceAnd using their wings to clap for her endlessly. I look at the oceans and thank them for making the moon happyFor playing with her like a friendAnd for giving her toys to cherish and play withAnd for letting things appreciate her.And for always waiting for her. I look at the sun and thank him for making the moon happyFor guiding her when she’s upsetAnd for showing her to the worldAnd for gifting her some of his lightAnd for helping the Earth listen to her. I look at my world and thank it for making the moon happyFor giving her a stage to be seen inAnd giving her the clouds to dance withAnd giving her the birds to clap forAnd giving her the world to perform for. I look at the moon and smile at her beautyAnd watch her radiant face light up the skyAnd take pictures of her fleeting performanceAnd listen to the orchestra accompanying her dance. I dance to the song of the birdsAnd the whisper of the windAnd in the glistening lightAnd I am happy, that I lived with the moon.
