VSA students competed in a variety of Scholastic regions, including New Jersey, New York, California, Utah, North Carolina, Canada, and more. Congratulations to all of our award-winning students, who join the 26 Scholastic winners VSA celebrated in the 2021–23 Scholastic awards! Our 56 Scholastic award winners join the ranks of the accomplished alumni of the long-running program, including filmmaker Ken Burns and writer Joyce Carol Oates. Students 13 and older can submit original work across 18 award categories in writing and art. Award selections are based upon originality, skill, and the emergence of personal vision or voice and without knowledge of the student’s name, gender, age, ethnicity, or hometown. Each year, hundreds of thousands of students across the United States submit their artwork and writing to the competition for consideration. In recent years, the competition has received over 330,000 submissions annually from students in all 50 states, awarding Gold Key, Silver Key, and Honorable Mention awards to outstanding student submissions. Many of the winning pieces were shaped in VSA’s Reading & Writing classes, in which students develop strong essays that champion their original ideas and voice. Our classes foster critical thinking skills paired with comprehensive reading comprehension and grammar practice to equip students with a holistic and well-rounded grasp on English language arts. With a dynamic curriculum that highlights work by classic and contemporary essay writers, VSA Reading & Writing classes gives students creative role models for their own self-expression.
